What does it mean to be a Functional Trainer?
To Mind & Move Academy, a functional trainer is an elevated fitness professional who focuses on real-life movement patterns to improve strength, mobility, and overall performance in daily activities, sports, or rehabilitation. Functional training emphasizes multi-joint, multi-muscle exercises that mimic the way the body moves in real life. We believe that the methods and strategies used as a Functional Trainer can provide real results for those looking to prevent injuries, heal from old injuries, develop long-term results and sustainable wellness. The best part is that Functional Training techniques can be applied to many styles and disciplines of fitness and yoga, making it very versatile and attractive to step up your coaching game. “I truly fell into the industry of fitness. I had seen Raf around my local gym and he was always friendly. I had just graduated from a nutrition program and at a time where I didn’t have much direction, Raf opened my eyes to the possibility of being a personal trainer. I thought he was joking at first; I had never considered this to be a career path for me – especially after completing school in an unrelated field. It was due to his genuine nature and his ability to connect with people that I took him seriously and took a chance on this industry. I believe he saw something in me, knowing that with a bit of guidance, I could be an incredibly successful trainer.
He mentored me while I was getting certified, showing me both the technical intricacies and the personal aspects of the training industry. His support that first year after my certification was what kept me going. It was hard work and long hours as I transitioned from my prior job into the world of training. Working with Raf softened the learning curve, allowing me hands on experience and the freedom to fail safely. He ensured I had someone to ask questions of, be there to pick his brain, and spar ideas; I flourished. He has become a lifelong friend and mentor.
I can’t express enough gratitude for the invaluable guidance and mentorship I received from Raf. From the moment he lured me into the world of training, he took me under his wing, offering not just knowledge but also unwavering support and encouragement.
Thanks to his mentorship, I’ve not only grown as a trainer but also as a person. I am forever grateful for his wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering belief in me.”

Raf and Sydney’s Fluid Body class was incredibly beneficial to both my personal practice and my teaching. Raf was thorough and patient in explaining the Kinstretch concepts and guiding us through the movements. Sydney skillfully combined Kinstretch and yoga into a more functional, sensation-guided practice—Fluid Body. I truly believe this type of class can benefit everyone by improving our mobility and helping us move more fluidly in our daily lives. I have incorporated some of these movements into my yoga teaching, and it made my day when my students gave me very positive feedback. Strongly recommended for everyone who wants to have better mobility and move with ease!

FAQs
Do I need any prior certificates to do this course?
No, you don’t need any, although it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Sometimes specific workplaces might require specific training, it depends on where you want to train. Our courses are through our accredited school, which allows you to get insurance (the most important thing).
Can this go towards my 300 Hour Functional Yoga Program?
Yes, you can take all these courses and this entire pathway to make up 100 Hours of your 300 Hour Pathway. If you took your 200 Hour through Mind & Move, then you’ve already taken some of these courses and couldn’t also add them towards your 300. Instead, you would count the hours of the courses you haven’t yet taken to go towards your 300 Hour.
How often does this program run?
All the courses a part of this program run 1-3 times a year. Some of the courses are already available virtually on demand at any time, with even more virtual options coming soon. We will eventually have an option to do this pathway 100% virtual. Please let us know if you’re interested in this option.
If I am already a Personal Trainer, will this be repeat content?
This program was designed to elevate the education of Personal Trainers, Group Trainers and Yoga Teachers, so, it depends! We’ve had fully certified Personal Trainers who went through all of these courses, who let us know that they learned more valuable and more applicable information than what they had learned from their PT certification they took. It could depend on the specific training you’ve done, who you’ve learned it from, and if it was up to date. Feedback from those who have taken our courses and are already certified students are consistently letting us know the information we teach is new and more up to date than their previous trainings.
Are these courses recognized by BCRPA and ISSA?
Yes! You can submit these courses as continuing education hours. They accept Yoga Alliance Accredited Certifications.
What’s the longest I can take to finish this program?
We recommend taking no longer than 2 years, because research is always evolving and there’s always new things to learn. If your schedule does not permit you to take it within a 2 year period please contact us and we will create an individualized plan for you.
