Low back pain is a highly common experience amongst our peers and it’s likely that you’ll come across someone who struggles with their low back pain and you might even have had or are currently experiencing it yourself. Unfortunately, lower back pain can hinder someone’s motivation to participate in movement and exercise, and it might prevent them from performing many yoga poses.

This course will explore the complex realm of low back pain and delve into advanced assessments to pinpoint the root cause of discomfort. Drawing heavily from the pioneering work of Dr. Stuart McGill, we'll gain profound insights into disc-related issues, injuries, and effective strategies for navigating pain-free movement amidst such challenges.

Key Topics:

  • What is Low Back Pain

  • Who is Dr. Stuart McGill

  • Common Low Back Injuries

  • Assessments for Low Back Pain

  • Training Considerations for Low Back Pain Students

  • Tissue Capacity

  • I left this course with so much knowledge on how to support my students with their low back injuries and insights on why they might be having pain. It was super informative and engaging! I will definitely take more courses in the future with Raf!

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Define low back pain, it’s prevalence, and the different types of low back pain.

  • Speak to the career of Dr. Stuart McGill, his research and expertise and how he’s significantly contributed to the understanding of how the spine functions and how to prevent and manage low back pain.

  • Understand the most common low back injuries that yoga teachers may encounter in their students, such as herniated discs, muscle strains, and sciatica.

  • Assess students with low back pain using various techniques and tools to generate different options for movement/poses that can better support the student.

  • Lead best practices for working with students who have low back pain, including modifications, props, and verbal cues to ensure a safe and supportive yoga practice.

  • Empower students to listen to their bodies and make informed choices in managing low back pain during yoga sessions.

  • Understand the concept of tissue capacity in relation to low back pain, which refers to the ability of tissues in the body to tolerate load and stress.
